Safety warning as potential injury claims top £5m
Source: Business.Scotsman.com, 5th September 2012
Faced with claims that might end up exceeding £5 million from injuries inflicted
by farm animals, the UK’s leading rural insurer yesterday issued a checklist for
all those working with livestock. NFU Mutual revealed they were currently dealing
with a number of claims that could result in settlements up to £5m from people who
had received devastating injuries while working with cattle. “Tragically, some of
these people will never work again and the effects of their accidents may well affect
the future of their families and farms. As a farmer myself, I’m well aware that
complacency is the biggest threat to life and limb. When we do a task every day,
there’s a real temptation to take shortcuts – putting ourselves at risk by not observing
safe working practices.”
Exercising at home is a £2bn accident waiting to happen: Insurers warn Britons to
not get carried away in post-Olympics boom
source: Daily Mail Online, 14th September 2012
Keep-fit fanatics who work out at home caused damage to the tune of £2.1billion
to their property and themselves last year. Last night, insurers warned Britons
who are thinking of getting fit after being inspired by the Olympics not to get
A study found that of the 62 per cent of us who have exercised in our homes, 26
per cent had caused at least £200 in accidental damage. Almost a quarter caused
damage to property and nearly a fifth hurt themselves, pulling a muscle or breaking
a bone, according to the survey by insurer Esure.
Accidents included slipping on flooring, crashing into furniture and TVs and tripping
over rugs, children and pets. Nikki Sellers, from Esure, warned people to take sensible
precautions, adding: ‘After an unforgettable summer of sport, it’s great to see
the nation becoming more active.’
Aging workforce expected to increase workplace health risks
Source: Workplace Savings and Benefits, 17th September 2012
Almost three-quarters (70%) of employers expect health issues in the workplace to
increase because of the aging workforce, research reveals. They believe older employees
suffer from different medical complications to younger employees and that this could
pose significant problems for organisations.
Companies to pay for health and safety probes
Source: FT.com, 30th September 2012
Businesses accused of breaching health and safety rules will from Monday be charged
£124 an hour for investigations as the watchdog responsible for workplace safety
seeks to cope with sharp cuts to its budget. The Health and Safety Executive will
be able to recover the cost of investigations whenever a potential breach is considered
serious enough to warrant a letter. Manufacturing and construction companies are
expected to be most at risk as they account for 92 per cent of all enforcement notices
issued in the year so far.
